  • I feel like I’ve been downsized

We have several layers of hierarchy where I work.  Some would say too many chiefs, and not enough indians.  We have the CEO, then two SR. VPs, then 2 VPs, 4 Directors, 2 Managers and 15 non-managers. (My title is Director of Technology – I report to one of the Sr. VPs)

The “Management Team” was made up of the CEO, the 2 Sr. VPs, the 2 VPs and the 4 Directors.  After two years (or more, but I’ve only been here two so I don’t know what went on before) a decision was made to cut all but one of the directors from the management team (keeping the one that reports directly to the CEO.)

So where does that leave me?  Am I now considered what the management team always refered to as “front-line staff”?

My pay didn’t get cut.  (At least, not yet.) I just have one less meeting a month to attend.  But I guess it’s an ego thing.  I liked being a part of the Management Team.

OTOH, I’ve found in the last couple of weeks that being the head of my department (technology) is a pain in the ass sometimes and I’d almost like to just go back to being a tech support or computer specialist and not have to be responsible for everyone’s software and hardware budgets, writing all the reports we need, making sure our network is up and running at all times, making sure our backups are working properly, making sure everyone in the office is doing their part to make the transition to the new database management system go smoothly.

LOL I think I need to make another protected post.  I’ll think about it.
