Decided to take my colorist’s advice
I walked into the salon last night after work and talked for a few minutes to the colorist, while she was pawing around my hair. She noted that my hair has layers of color. (I hadn’t noticed.) The roots are really dark (my natural color is dark brown). The ends are dark, the middle part was a shade or two lighter (gradually darkening to the ends.) Maybe this is just how do-it-yourself coloring works (or doesn’t, as the case may be.)
She advised against using a color that was too light (I had been thinking light ash brown with dark golden blonde highlights because my complexion has lightened over the years, as I’ve avoided the sun.) Because of my dark roots, she recommended a color that was a dark chestnut color (she kept calling it caramel, but to me, that is light brown.) Then she suggested subtle highlights. We looked through a book and found a picture that had a look that we both agreed would work on me. So now my hair is dark chestnut with very subtle reddish highlights.
Mac thought it looked great. And since he looks at it more than anyone, that’s all that matters

What, no pictures? Sounds nice! It’s sounds like you had someone really knowledgable. It’s amazing to me how complex colour gets and what the colours actually are. I think the base colour Stephen uses on me is like an dark auburn (I think he calls it russet) and then uses two different kinds of highlights (one he calls lowlights) – and both are blond! I’m not sure how all it works, but everything turns out red(dish).
@Tyche - I decided not to do a picture because the change is so subtle, I doubt a camera would pick it up. She did say we could tweak the color. I may go for both high- and low-lights next time. I considered it this time, but decided to go with just subtle highlights.
Nonsense. We need a picture. By the way, my colorist told me to shave my head.
@Gneiss_Guy - Your colorist is a dork. If my complexion was more red I would be a carrot-top. I’d have long red hair curled in a perm. (like this) That has ALWAYS been my favorite color but I knew it would look hideous on me. (The picture is of Jamie Rose, who played detective Kate Mahoney in the 1-season show “Lady Blue” in the 80s.)
I’m glad it turned out well!
